The participation of sportswear on the catwalks

One of the most common things nowadays is to see compositions on the streets where sportswear stands out. We are not just talking about an outfit with a Balenciaga bag, Acne Studios jacket, Osklen t-shirt, and Adidas performance pants, or an outfit with running shoes, but rather about collaborations between designers from different segments. We also asked for the opinions of people who live in contact with fashion daily to express their views on the subject.

Of course, the minds behind the big brands have been closely observing how people are behaving regarding this wave of mixing high-end with streetwear and sportwear, bringing a bolder perspective to the world of fashion. However, it is impossible to look at the street and not remember at least one collaboration with a sports brand, and that is what is happening in high fashion.

The influence of streetwear

The great pioneer when it comes to collaboration with these brands. In fact, it is a market that is currently being very well received by fashion consumers. A segment that, without a doubt, increasingly influences the major fashion shows we see on runways around the world. Bape applying its 1st camo on a Puma soccer shoe, Supreme developing a line alongside Champion, and Stussy collaborating with Nike. Thus, we recall some of the great contributions of streetwear to the sports world.

In fashion, it has been no different, brands like Off-white, Gosha Rubchinskiy, and Vetements are awakening the desire to consume a sweatshirt instead of skinny jeans, a soccer jersey instead of a shirt, and so on. It is something new that is making people feel more "at ease" when getting dressed.

Who is helping this to happen?

Recently, we saw on the runways pieces from the English brand Umbro printed on products from the Off-White label by Virgil Abloh, Marcelo Burlon with County of Milan, and Vetements revealed their collaborations with Reebok and Wang with Adidas Originals. But Gosha Rubchinskiy is the major champion in this type of collaboration, having worked with four major brands, including Kappa, Fila, Reebok, and Adidas that can now be crossed off his list.

The opinion of those who understand

“It's the principle of cyclical fashion, right? We are living the 90s again, and to live that decade this mix is essential. I really enjoyed seeing Champion and Sérgio Tacchini on the runways,” says Pedro Andrade, designer and founder of PIET.
The point we have observed is that indeed when a collaboration like this happens, it is mostly inspired by the 80s and 90s, something that is currently very frequent in the world, where vintage t-shirts and classic sneakers from that era are used. This is exactly where the high-end brands come in, rescuing great hits and showing how they can easily be used today.

“I see this approach as something natural. Fashion is going through a phase of total proximity to the reality of the streets. Sports are becoming increasingly part of people's lives, especially in major centers. It was just a matter of time for these two universes to come closer. Sports bring technology to fashion, and fashion delivers design. It is a junction that, if well thought out, has synergy and is sure to succeed,” emphasizes Augusto Mariotti, creative director of FFW.

The cool thing is to open the mind to new horizons, and this is the key point, not only how collaborations and the space of sports applied in fashion, but a great example of all these “changes” in this new era are the genderless clothing that many brands have decided to produce and have been well received by the public. Now we just have to see how long this type of collaboration will last or if it will just be another fleeting fashion trend.
