Billabong LAB launches a collaboration with the artistic union of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat
The Australian brand launched a collaboration that unites the works of Andy Warhol, an icon of Pop art, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The two had very different artistic outputs; while Warhol brought everyday life into his works, Basquiat brought graffiti into art exhibitions. Despite their differences, they were close friends and had a contrasting relationship: Warhol was older and had already established himself in the art world, meaning he was a recognized artist, whereas Basquiat was at the beginning of his meteoric success.
The two artists worked together on several paintings; Andy Warhol admired Jean-Michel's works, and the collaboration made Warhol return to painting. It was an experience of artistic rejuvenation for Warhol.
The Billabong LAB, a division of the brand that supports artists, musicians, designers, photographers, and surf icons, partnered with the Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts and Artestar to create pieces that bring together the style of both artists and the lifestyle of surf culture. The collection includes shorts, bikinis, t-shirts, and accessories for men and women. The pieces are already available on the Billabong website.
