Brazilian Customizes Air Force 1 x Stussy
A few years ago, many people began to hear about a completely white Nike sneaker, seen in most Rap music videos: the Air Force 1. Access to the AF-1 in Brazil was practically impossible around eight or ten years ago, being sold in very few stores and in very limited quantities, unlike what happens today.
Seen as a blank canvas for customizers, the Air Force in its most classic color - all white - served as a basis for Brazilian Rodrigo Lima to think about what a collaboration between Nike and Stussy would look like, in his eyes.
Rodrigo learned about Stussy while working at one of the largest streetwear stores in São Paulo. There, he says he learned a lot about the brand and its influence on the scene, coming to admire it.
After seeing some Instagram profiles related to sneaker customization, Rodrigo gathered courage and decided to make his own.
"The work to customize was quite complicated, no matter how it may seem. Everything was done by hand. The splatters on the sole were made with a toothbrush full of paint, but the hardest part was the writing because I had to draw on the sneaker and I couldn't make mistakes, since the paint wouldn't come off the leather. It took me a whole day just to do the writing. The label on the tongue was difficult because I don't know how to sew, and I had to rip it off from some shirts I have. But in the end, the result turned out the way I expected."
The sneaker incorporates elements like the classic Stussy tag, used by Shawn to sign surfboards even before making clothes, the "SS-Link" logo, the year the brand was founded, and a label on the tongue. Splashes on the midsole were added at the beginning of the customization process, giving a unique touch to the footwear.
Rodrigo says he has already sold the sneaker, but plans to continue and take his work further.
