On April 20th, Weed Day, (4/20 in American format), Netflix released its new documentary about the herb “Grass is Greener,” or in Portuguese “Baseado em Fatos Raciais.” Directed by Hip-Hop legend, Fab 5 Freddy, the doc aims to educate the public not only about the history of marijuana in America but also how that history is impacting the push for legalization and the development of the Cannabis industry today.

Based on Racial Facts is not a movie about smoking weed and getting high, although much of that occurs on camera. Instead, it is a documentary that confronts the racism of the ongoing war on Marijuana. Through interviews with lawyers and criminal justice experts, the doc tells the story of the devastating impact that marijuana criminalization has had on Black and Latino communities in the United States.

Among the stars featured, some of the names include: Snoop Dogg, Damian Marley, B-Real and Sen Dog from Cypress Hill, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Steven Hager editor of High Times magazine, and other pop culture celebrities. The documentary highlights the connections between Cannabis and Jazz and Hip-Hop. As Fab 5 Freddy says in the official trailer for the doc, "The history of Cannabis in America has been linked to the history of music." Check it out below.
