Presenting another one of our weekly playlists, we selected Brazilian songs for you to discover or remember, to enjoy from a rainy day to a barbecue with family and friends.

But do you know how MPB originated?

MPB, short for Música Popular Brasileira, is a musical genre that emerged in Brazil in the 1960s, amidst a context of cultural and political effervescence.

At that time, the country was undergoing social and political transformations, with João Goulart's government being overthrown by the military coup of 1964. Brazilian culture and art were also undergoing a moment of renewal and experimentation, with movements like Bossa Nova and Teatro de Arena bringing new influences and approaches to the country's cultural scene.

It was in this context that MPB emerged, as a form of expression that combined elements of traditional Brazilian popular music with influences from Bossa Nova, jazz, and international folk music. MPB was also influenced by the ideas and political debates of the time, with many artists using their songs to address themes such as social inequality, political oppression, and the struggle for civil rights.

Among the main names of MPB are artists like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, among others. MPB has established itself as an important musical genre in the Brazilian cultural scene, having influenced various other artistic and musical manifestations in the country and around the world.

Very rich, diverse, and full of life, reflecting the history and culture of the country, this week's playlist is filled with great names from Brazilian music.
