The documentary From the Mouth of Trash directed by Danilo Arenas is a narrative about Nego Bala and his origins. It shows the sad reality of one of the largest capitals in the world, the cracolândia, now portrayed with a perspective that few people know, or that they know but pretend does not exist.

We talked to Nego Bala to better understand what was shown in the documentary and see what we can expect for the artist's future in the next decade.

NTS: How did the idea of filming the documentary about the mouth of trash come about?

Nego: The idea came from the need to portray our reality, which has never been portrayed individually. It is also the result of a partnership with Gustavo Santos and Danilo Arenas. We saw the opportunity to portray our reality from another perspective. The script of the work was quite spontaneous, because how can you talk about reality in a scripted way? Let's live it, right?! It’s impossible to write about daily life like that, so we took the camera to the street and went to live reality. What we see in those images is entirely from everyday life. There was no staging. We went to the street as if it were just another normal day, but as I say: "it's normal, but it's not natural." It also came from this need to portray, to show our daily lives, so that our people can identify, and those who don't know can come to know and respect. It's the need to be heard, to speak, to have a voice. This partnership was awesome.

NTS: How do you see yourself in the current rap/funk/trap market that often talks about luxury, glamour, and ostentation? Do you think this has become the main focus in the lyrics, sidelining the real reality as shown in the documentary?

Nego: Today in the current market, we see many lyrics seeking consumerism and the material side. I, personally, even like to talk about clothes, brands that catch my attention, but I have a greater affection for the side of knowledge and passing an ideology in the lyrics because, sometimes, we lose the touch that art should revolutionize the feelings inside us. The side of knowledge, empowerment, and protagonism is what truly matters in art, in addition to evolution, both spiritual and physical and emotional. The voice of the community is samba, it’s funk, it’s rap and it’s trap. And we are coming against the tide. It’s knowledge in the vein, Paulo Freire in our heads, reading in our thoughts, spiritual property, self-esteem, and so on.

NTS: Nego Bala at Coala and a new album on the way. What can we expect for the year 2020?

Nego: You can expect a bomb is coming, we are seeking influence from jazz, blues, umbanda, candomblé, macumba, samba, rock, reggaeton, dub. We are appropriating musical rhythms, especially from afro. You can expect a bomb is coming, summary of the bad guy.
